Okay food is always a favorite topic... Went to Bob's Big Bear...the old Bob's Big Boy....they're menu is building back up again but still no Sumo Burger!
Had dinner at Duc's Bistro. Food was good, but I left kinda hungry. It is family style and we had 5 in our party.
Some pics from my last trip home for Xmas. Mitsuken Breakfast Combo. So dank Orchids for my parents 25th anniversary. Filet w/ Seared Foie and Barolo reduction. I'm a ribeye guy but went with this for the foie. Filet was tender as usual, but the steak itself was mangled and already cut for me so that was kinda weird. Slightly overcooked - medium-well when I asked MR. Plate was hot so I'm thinking they had my plate up before the rest of the entrees were ready. Was drinking Old Fashioneds Really awesome dessert. I have a smoker at my place so I do ribs a lot. SB Sunday. KC rub. Look at that smoke ring. (Rack in the foreground was rubbed with a sriracha rub hence the color)
Anyone know how to make Garlic Chicken? I'm planning on buying a countertop deep fryer. Would love to make some dank garlic chicken
those ribs look great. that steak does look mangled. there's a bunch of newish mexican spots on the island. i've tried mexi-can by the airport, alejandros way up in kalihi valley, and taqueria el ranchero in wahiawa. all of them are ok i guess. not sure i would recommend anyone go out of their way to try them.
What about an air fryer? Less oil and "healthier". https://www.bigoven.com/recipe/mitsu-kens-garlic-chicken/193836
We were going to try that El Ranchero in Wahiawa but last minute changes plans. Now I'm kind of glad to read that being I would probably have thrown a fit because my messican standards are pretty high....sort of.
You all should try making your own tacos. Much cheaper, economical, and tastier. Pretty fun too Get this book and a cast iron tortilla press (24 bucks or so on Amazon) Some tacos I made. Made the tortillas and salsas as well. The savings are pretty apparent once you start making everything from scratch. For example, a bag of masa harina is like 3 bucks but can make you >200 tortillas. Savings on tortillas right there. A 1x batch of raw salsa verde or salsa roja (in the deli containers above) costs $5 each tops and makes a good amount (8-10oz)
didn't make my own tortillas but i made some carnitas in the crockpot and we made burritos at home. it was pretty good. maybe i should try making the tortillas too. it was not bad. there was a taco truck that used to park in the schofield masonic lodge that was really good and that taco truck that used to park in mililani chevron was pretty good.
Serg's was my chit in high school. Now I'm spoiled by the good and cheap stuff here in Omaha. Make my own tacos, but still gotta get taco truck Lengua or Pastor
I do most of my grocery shopping at Costco and alternate between chicken thighs and ground beef. Buying ground beef 8lbs at a time forces me to get creative in terms of meal prep / cooking most of it at once so that it doesn't go bad (I freeze a pound or two for burgers or fried rice once I run out of my prep though). Went with meatloaf as my main thing this time, and also cooked some up for spaghetti. Also made a gravy from the drippings. Turned out way better than I expected. Meatloaf slightly undersalted / not as flavorful, but it all works out well. Rice, underseasoned meatloaf, ketchup/brown sugar/sriracha glaze, and the salty gravy makes for a crazy awesome layering of flavors. Considering buying some bread mid-week to make meatloaf sandwiches if I get sick of rice+meatloaf.
