How the F did the Marco Polo apartments not have fire sprinklers retrofitted in?

I get that it was built before fire code mandated sprinklers, but still...

Cost was deemed too high at $4305 per unit, in 2005. The AOAO probably had the owners take a vote and it got shut down. Sad, but when you are voting on whether to do something in your perfectly functional condo, and it'll cost you $4k, most will vote against. If the city offers long term financing for this kind of retrofit, it would have a much better chance. Coming up with $4k hits people in their pocketbooks hard. Say you finance them for 5 years, then it becomes a much more palatable amount of $70 per month, instead of $4k all at once.

    Does Kukui have sprinklers?

Yup. Built after the 1974 city ordinance, which surprised me. Thought it would be older / older than Marco Polo.
They retrofitted/upgraded the fire alarm system as well when I was growing up.

Now that I think about it, there was a fire in Kukui Tower when I was in high school.

I belonged to a few community associations and usually when ever there's a vote to pay for something that the owners have to shell out it's usually a "NO"...

Then when something happens they all point fingers....

What's the best way to cook them? Someone gave my mom two of them and she (and I) have no idea WTF to do

Ugly fukers, I'd be scared to eat them if I were at home

EDIT: My mom said she cooked them Chinese-restaurant style. Chopped up, floured, fried. Said they were very good.

Upgraded the fire system, but still no sprinklers. http://www.kitv.com/story/35917026/...rise-sprinkler-systems-after-marco-polo-blaze

Kukui Tower, not Plaza. Common mistake.

I get that it's expensive to retrofit decades-old buildings, but at this point they're pretty much putting a price on a (potential) human life. That's always an uneasy conversation / can lead to a slippery slope.

Example: Buildings that predominantly house the elderly (like Marco Polo?), the most at risk/unlikely to escape in the event of a fire, should have sprinklers. But then utilitarian/somewhat-common-sense opponents will say... why value their lives that much at that point in their lifespan? Which leads to maybe old people shouldn't get the best safety features, even though they may need it the most.
