alan wong's or mavro are kind of obvious choices. maybe also consider le bistro.
personally, i like 12 ave grill, maybe town or hy's (haven't been there for ages though).
knowing what you post, you'd probably be better off at vintage cave.

for my birthday the other week, we went to rainbows and ate in the car at diamond head lookout while my son slept in his car seat. that was actually really nice.

Humble brag but I did a lot of research this summer and a paper I collaborated on is in the peer review process for the journal Nature right now, which is one of the biggest journals (second to NEJM) in the world. A Nature pub/authorship + another journal pub I have is gonna look great on my residency applications
Couldn't believe it when I read that it was submitted to Nature

My dad has suggested 53 by the Sea before.
I just looked at the menu and I don't really like their a la carte menu -- don't like the price-point for pretty blah/unoriginal dishes.

However, their $100 and $150 tasting menus look to be pretty legit. I don't think my parents have done tasting menus before. I'll pitch it to my dad

Haha personally I'm all about the Vintage Cave or Senia or Mavro tasting menu tier but it's gonna be a whole family dinner so that's definitely too $$$, I don't like subjecting the fam to overly expensive places.

12th Ave Grill actually looks really good, I'll definitely consider it.

EDIT: lol could just do a 2 birds / 1 stone at 53 by the Sea, rest of my family does $100 tasting menu for parents' anniversary, I do the $150 tasting menu for my bday.

150$ is my expenses on dinner for the entire month. Sheez. China is cheap.

Damn, Uber and Lyft now allowed to pick up people at HNL. Not good for my dad.

The only redeeming thing is that the rideshare holding area is so far away from the airport pickup, might dissuade people who can't wait 5-10 min.

DoT should charge Uber/Lyft the same amount that the taxi drivers pay for airport pickups. I'm guessing the taxi drivers pay more than the 7% Uber/Lyft is paying.

OMG, I just heard the new CD attack siren. With all of them going off, it sounds like a fire truck siren, but way louder.

What's with HPD not enforcing the sit/lie ban? I saw hundreds of people sitting on the sidewalks from Chinatown, out to Kakaako. Lots of people even had tents!

Man, those Ospreys are not quiet aircraft! I had a couple fly over the house about 300 ft off the ground and I had to go outside to see what was causing the racket. I go outside and there are two Osprey flying away. I can imagine a squadron of them in formation playing Ride of the Valkyries.

Very interesting guy last night....you know those delivery drivers with those company lighted company logos stuck on their car roofs. Well I stop this guy for excessive speeding and as soon as I walk up to his window....he's all bus up! Too much holiday cheer I guess...and representing the company too!
